Navigating IUB: New Faculty Guide

Welcome to IU!

July 13, 2026

On behalf of the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs (OVPFAA), it is my pleasure to welcome you to Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). I am delighted that you have chosen to bring your talents, expertise, and creativity to our community and look forward to supporting your success as members of our faculty.

This year, more than 130 new full-time academic appointees are joining IU Bloomington across our sixteen schools and the College. As you begin your journey at IU, know that you are joining a community that is invested in your success. The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs is here to support your professional growth, connect you with colleagues and mentors, and help you build meaningful relationships across campus. We look forward to all that you will contribute to IU Bloomington and to the many ways our community will be enriched by your presence.

As you settle in, I encourage you to explore the many programs that OVPFAA sponsors for faculty enrichment and development, including our outstanding Scholarly Writing Program, faculty mentoring programs, and William T. Patten Foundation Lecture Series to name a few. Whether you attend a lecture, participate in a promotion and tenure workshop, or learn more about IUB's research support and incentive programs, I hope you will take advantage of the resources available to you. If you have questions, ideas, or would simply like to connect, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at vpfaa@iu.edu

Because a transition to IU is often a transition for an entire family, we warmly encourage you to bring your loved ones to the New Faculty Orientation and Welcome Picnic on Friday, August 21, 2026 from 4-7pm at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center.

We are glad you are here and wish you every success in the days and years ahead. Go Hoosiers!

Hoosiers Connect

Beginning a new faculty position is both exciting and challenging. Hoosiers Connect offers an opportunity to build meaningful connections with colleagues who are also new to campus, share experiences, and develop relationships that can enrich your professional and personal experience at IU for years to come.

The program begins with a welcome event in early September and continues with four small-group gatherings every other week in September, October, and November. Each group is facilitated by a current IUB faculty member and brings together new faculty from across disciplines in an informal and welcoming setting. These small group conversations provide a chance to get to know one another, ask questions, and begin building a supportive community across campus.

Many faculty tell us that one of the most valuable parts of their first years at IU is the network of colleagues they meet along the way. Hoosiers Connect is designed to help foster those connections early and create a sense of belonging within the broader Bloomington community.

Interested? Submit your name and contact information using the form below and a member of the OVPFAA will be in touch!
