Luther Dana Waterman Professorship

The Luther Dana Waterman Professorship

Recognizing outstanding newly tenured professors

In 1915, Indianapolis physician and IU School of Medicine Professor Emeritus Luther Dana Waterman, established an endowment at Indiana University in support of scientific research. The Waterman Institute for Scientific Research provided IU researchers with critical research support funding, including Arthur L. Foley, professor of physics, being named the first Waterman Professor. The Waterman gift continues to support the work of IUB professor Richard Shiffrin, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.

In 2015, a second Waterman Professorship was established to support an outstanding tenured associate professor working in the sciences, broadly defined.

Individuals selected will receive a monetary award in support of their ongoing research and carry the title of Luther Dana Waterman Professor for a period of two years.
