Scope
All IUB faculty with tenure and academic appointees holding long-term appointments (hereafter “faculty members”).
Policy Statement
- In the event that financial exigency is invoked by the university, the UFC will form an ad hoc Financial Exigency Committee.
- In said event, the BFC will provide a list of faculty members from which additional members of the UFC Financial Exigency Committee will be selected.
- This list of faculty members should be representative of a broad range of faculty, reflecting the diversity of faculty appointments and other skills and expertise as deemed important by CREM.
Policy Summary
This policy responds to University Policy ACA-41, Faculty Role Regarding University Financial Exigency, Procedure § C. 4. by defining the means of selecting faculty with tenure and academic appointees holding long-term appointments for possible representation on the university ad hoc Financial Exigency Committee in the event of a
declaration of financial exigency by the university (as defined in ACA-41).
Procedures
- The BFC Executive committee shall, in consultation with CREM and the full BFC membership, be charged with the formation of the said list.
- The proposed list of faculty should be generated using an approach whereby BFC members consult with their constituents.
- Proposed faculty need not be current BFC members.
Definitions
- The term “Indiana University Bloomington” (IUB) shall refer to all academic and nonacademic units and subunits of Indiana University that either exist on or report to Bloomington campus academic or administrative officers.
- “Termination of an appointment with continuous tenure, or of a probationary or other nontenured appointment before the end of the specified term, may occur under extraordinary circumstances because of a demonstrably bona fide financial exigency, i.e., a severe financial crisis that fundamentally compromises the academic integrity of the institution as a whole and that cannot be alleviated by less drastic means.” American Association of University Professors 1940 Recommended Institutional Regulations on Academic Freedom and Tenure, § 4.
