Navigating IUB: Fulfilling our strategic vision

August 27, 2024

New colleagues, welcome to our esteemed and talented faculty at IU Bloomington. We are thrilled you have joined us and look forward to your many contributions to our intellectual community.

It is an exciting time to be at Indiana University. We are making tremendous progress toward our bold strategic vision, IU 2030. Our plan’s three key pillars: student success and opportunity, transformative research and creativity, and service to our state and beyond, animate our efforts across the faculty and campus.

I trust that you will quickly find your place not only in your new academic home but in any of the interdisciplinary dialogues propelling new discoveries and academic programs and intersections forward. From environmental research to study of the impacts of aging, human-centered artificial intelligence to quantum physics -- and countless dimensions of the arts, humanities, and sciences between -- I am confident you will find willing innovators and collaborators to bring your inspired solutions to life.

As you settle into campus life, please continue to tell us both directly and through your schools and departments, and through our Faculty Affairs and Provost’s office teams, what we can do to further support you in your teaching, scholarship, and service.

Welcome to IU Bloomington. Together let’s chase our highest aspirations.

Executive Vice President and Provost, IU Bloomington

IUB 2030 – Year 1

IUB 2030, the strategic plan for IU Bloomington, charts an ambitious, seven-year vision across three pillars—Student Success & Opportunity, Transformational Research & Creativity, and Service to Our State and Beyond. It builds on our historic strengths while positioning our campus to thrive in an ever-changing world and expand the positive impact on the communities we serve and support.

Over the course of the first year of implementation, IUB has seen significant growth across the three pillars, including:

Student Success & Opportunity

  • Increasing on-time undergraduate graduation rates with a priority on reducing and closing equity gaps.
  • Strengthening Undergraduate first-to-second year retention rates, with a priority on reducing and closing equity gaps.
  • Improving Graduate student retention, completion rates and time to completion.
  • Increasing philanthropic support for endowed financial aid to support student access and affordability.
  • Increasing online enrollment in academic programs, including career-aligned certificates and micro-credentials.
  • Reduce the number of students receiving a grade below a C- in 100-400 level courses.

Transformational Research & Creativity

  • Expand external sponsored research.
  • Doubling the number of external grants over $5 million.
  • Increasing sponsored research from foundation, non-profits, industry, and government contracts.
  • Increasing scholarship.
  • Increasing invention disclosures, licenses and license revenue, and the number of faculty and student startups.

Service to the State

  • Expanding the number and scale of external partnerships to address future workforce talent needs in Indiana, the nation, and the world.
  • Increasing the number of P-12 (preschool through high school) partnerships, including career-pathway partnerships with high schools, in the campus’s service region.
  • Establishing a baseline and increasing the number of IU graduates hired to Indiana-based industry sectors supported through the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

As we move into year two of implementation, opportunities abound for all faculty to contribute to the overall success of the IUB 2030 strategic plan. Whether it is the little extra time you spend with that undergraduate or graduate student that helps them to succeed or exploring opportunities for collaboration and funding in support of that great research idea, we acknowledge that small actions done together can have a profound influence on the lives of our students, on the impact of our research, and on our service to the State.
