Navigating IUB: New Faculty Guide

Navigating innovation and research at IU

August 13, 2024

On behalf of IU Innovates and IU Research, we are glad to welcome each and every one of you to the IU community. Whether you are a tenure-track faculty member, an instructional rank faculty, or a research rank faculty, the impact each of you will have on our students and community stretches far beyond the confines of IU Bloomington. As you will read below and experience daily, IU faculty have made outstanding contributions to society in not only the sciences and medicine, but in the arts, theater, and humanities. The opportunities you will have to collaborate with your fellow faculty and students will hopefully be enriching for both you and those you meet.

IU Innovates and IU Research are here to support you every step of the way. If there is anything that either of us can to do support you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Bring on Tomorrow: IU innovation and research

Research for the sake of research is important, but IU research has and continues to contribute to the wellbeing and advancement of knowledge in the State of Indiana and beyond. IU has fostered a culture of perpetual discovery since its founding in 1820. Did you know that the first successful machine to measure blood-alcohol content was invented here at IU? Or that the chemical formula that eventually became Crest toothpaste was developed here? The most successful intervention for testicular cancer was discovered through research chaired by Dr. Lawrence Einhorn in the IU School of Medicine, which revolutionized prostate cancer care increasing the survival rate of this type of cancer from 5% to 95%. Even today, IU Researchers like Drs. Laura Brown and Julia van Kessel, founders of Quornix, a biotechnology start-up are making an impact through the groundbreaking research in therapeutic technology to treat bacterial diseases while also providing IU student’s with a year-long, hands-on research opportunity.

IU Innovates

Officially launched in 2023, IU Innovates provides IU faculty and students a focal point for the university’s efforts to accelerate entrepreneurship and innovation. IU Innovates strives to ensure entrepreneurs across the university know where to start, and continually access the right resource at the right time through three approaches:

  1. Front door to IU’s entrepreneurship ecosystem with coworking, pre-incubation, and incubation activities--at the Von Lee building, 517 E Kirkwood Ave--led by a community of entrepreneurs. Please join us for lunch and coworking on Thursdays.
  2. Sponsorship of IU entrepreneurship resources, guided by an internal advisory board that enables collaboration, information sharing, and experimentation among entrepreneurship supporters across the university.
  3. Impact storytelling about IU entrepreneurs through the IU Plan 2030 pillars of student success, transformative research and creativity, and service to the state and beyond.

IU Innovates partners with groups like the Shoemaker Innovation Center in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering; IU Ventures, which invests in and supports IU-affiliated early-stage companies; the Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic; the IU Innovation and Commercialization Office; and the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation in the Kelley School of Business.

IU Research

Do you have the next great idea that will make a positive impact on our world today? IU Research provides support for various stages of a researcher’s career or the research process. The Seed Grant program provides support for new, innovative research or creative activity projects that are sustainable through external funding. The Research Equipment Fund supports the purchase of new research or creative activity equipment, the repairing or upgrading of existing equipment, and/or for datasets that are strategically necessary to support high-quality research, attract and retain research faculty, and general external funding. Additionally, IU Bloomington Provost, Rahul Shrivastav, announced in June new research incentive plans to support IU Bloomington faculty, including an incentive plan to reward salary coverage on external grants, increase opportunities for graduate students, and support faculty taking prestigious fellowship leaves. These and many other opportunities are available to IU Bloomington faculty in support of the research mission of the university.
