11 IU Bloomington faculty selected for Big Ten Academic Alliance leadership programs

By: Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs

Tuesday, September 01, 2026

Eleven Indiana University Bloomington faculty and academic leaders were selected to participate in three leadership programs offered by the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

“Leadership can take many forms, from supporting a colleague through a tough decision to shaping the future of a school or campus,” said Carrie Docherty, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. “These programs provide our faculty with space to grow as leaders and collaborators. I’m grateful to work alongside those selected for the Big Ten Leadership Institute cohorts and look forward to the ways they will share their talents with IU.”

Five department chairs and academic leaders were chosen for the Departmental Executive Officer Program, a three-day workshop involving department heads and chairs from Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions:

  • Jaroslaw Harezlak, Chair, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington
  • Sarah lmhoff, Chair, Religious Studies, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Haizhen Lin, Chair, Business Economics and Public Policy, Kelley School of Business
  • Gamze Ozogul, Chair, Center for Research on Learning and Technology, School of Education
  • Matthew Pratola, Chair, Statistics, College of Arts and Sciences

The Departmental Executive Officer Program covers topics such as time management, faculty development, performance reviews and group problem-solving.

Five faculty members were selected for the Academic Leadership Program, which develops the leadership skills of professors who may pursue careers in academic administration:

  • Keera Allendorf, Associate Dean for Social and Historical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Jessica Lester, Associate Vice Provost, Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs
  • Charles Lin, Executive Associate Dean, Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies
  • Grace Sembajwe, Interim Executive Associate Dean, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington
  • Andrew Weaver, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, The Media School

The Academic Leadership Program is a prestigious professional development initiative that prepares faculty leaders to navigate and excel in academic administration, with a network of more than 2,400 alumni including many university presidents, provosts, and deans.

One dean was selected for the Deans Leadership Program, which is designed for deans who have been appointed to their role within the past 36 months and helps build a trusted professional network within and beyond their institution:

  • Kurt Ribisl, Dean, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance, formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, includes the 18 universities of the Big Ten Conference. The alliance is governed and funded by the provosts of the member universities. Big Ten Academic Alliance programs and initiatives are coordinated by a staff based in Champaign, Illinois.
